What after BE?

Posted by: baregars on: July 17, 2010

All is well….Thats how most engineers spend a minimum of 4yrs .Learning ,enjoying ,searching ,scribbling ,mugging and slogging. The PLs at that time seem to be the most difficult time and days are spent at the rate of seconds couping up with the syllabus meant for 6 months(to be covered within a span of 25 odd days) .After all that so called engineering each one of these Idiots has a mixture of feelings while stepping  a foot outside the college gate (hoping for the best) for the last time .From my experience this trill of “no more integrations and derivations” lasts only for a few days.

Now what…Till date we r under the a safe tag of STUDENT.Now who r we? Bekaar Engineers as many call it. Especially in my campus where rarely there is a campus placement. And when very few from an academic batch manage to pull there aggregates to 60% this question is a common phenomena! What next?.From my batch i know very few who have a planned future and only few on my finger tips who have successfully executed that plan. For others like me its always what next?!

Few by choice and few who have no choice start running after Walkins and Reference letters, compromising with smaller salary figures hoping that experience gets the better out of their..”Degree Certificate”.The others who have an option to study further opt for Masters  in management or in there respective fields of engineering.A very few dare to enter into public service exams(The no. is so low that i added this line while re-reading).The confusion is with these guys who have a choice! To study further or not to? To Work while study?or to Study while u work?.

This topic being raised to the floor must have already revealed that I am among those confused lucky once.

Further study gives me a an extra edge in a cut-throat competition.Makes my progress up the ladder in corporate world a bit easier.Opting for management studies in my case give me a (so called) gold-striking combo of management and technical aspects.Pay scale may have an extra “zero” appended to it.And more importantly Gives the 5-point people (including me) another choice to make there CV better during Interviews.I know Marks and Percentages are not everything that matters, but they are certainly the things which eventually matter(a lot).

On the other hand getting into a job and actually learning what an engineer does is also an option. It is good to know how grass root work is actually done before climbing into higher and more important positions.Tho u start at considerably low salaries(am talking about the 5-point people) with a good experience and work skill u can later demand expectation.A point of view is also that u need to utilize the knowledge u have in ur engineering(???).In InfoTech yes technology keeps changing and to be inn the race we have to stay update.Cos in industry a newly launched successful technology is more important than a Korth book written in 90′s and 4th publication printing almost the same.

For me the decision was based on how much do I want to earn after may be 3yrs?where do i want to stay?etc etcIn 3 yrs after doing a job i find my increments going to about 35K max(This is what i may get not what i want. What i want is about 10K more min). And after Masters if a start at say 25K (considering a par performance) in about a yr or say another six months that goes to 35K.So slogging in in a software company for minimum of 10Hrs a day is definitely tougher than studying for the same period(???) in two yrs.Plus i have an additional degree.Thats how my calculation went.

Basically if u calculate ur standard of living in the next 10yrs and what u need to earn for the same; I am sure u will have an answer to this very confusing question…What after B.E?
